How to renew an expired NYC work permit ($130 — PW2 vs DOB NOW)
An expired permit freezes your job: no inspection, no sign-off, no close-out — until you renew.
Work done after a permit expires can't be inspected or signed off until you renew. Here's the $130 renewal — which system, which path, and the 2-year window you can't miss.
When this applies
You have an expired (or soon-to-expire) work permit tied to an open job.
How it's normally done — and how we make it easy
| Step | The usual way | With DailyDog |
|---|---|---|
| Know which system + path | Guess between BIS and DOB NOW | Routed by issuing system and with/without-change |
| Catch insurance lapses | Discover it at renewal | Warned before the auto-extension cutoff |
| Don't miss the window | Let the 2-year window close | Tracked as a deadline with reminders |
Step by step
- 1
Renew in the system that issued it
Newer jobs renew in DOB NOW: Build (Work Permits dashboard → Renew Work Permit). Older jobs renew in eFiling/BIS. The fee is $130 per work type.
- 2
Make sure the permittee's insurance and license are current
General-liability, disability, and workers'-comp insurance plus the license must be current. If insurance/license is renewed at least 5 days before expiry, the permit auto-extends free.
- 3
Supersede if you're changing the contractor
To change the applicant (or if there's a civil-penalty hold or concrete fees), file a PW2 'renewal with change' in person at a borough office — §1 Reason = Renewal with Changes, §8 notarized.
- 4
Then finish the job
Once renewed, complete the outstanding inspections and drive the job to sign-off or a Letter of Completion.
Before you start — have this ready
- The permit / job number, and which system issued it (DOB NOW: Build vs BIS/eFiling).
- The permittee's license status and their general-liability, disability, and workers'-comp insurance dates.
- $130 per work type for the renewal fee.
Who to contact
What to ask
Confirm with the permittee (your contractor) that their license and all three insurances are current before filing — any lapse blocks the renewal, and you'd have to supersede with a new contractor via a PW2 at a borough office.

Frequently asked
- How much does it cost to renew a DOB work permit?
- $130 per work type. It's paid online in DOB NOW: Build, or at a borough office for a PW2 renewal-with-change.
- Can I still renew an expired permit?
- Yes if the permit is active, or if the job had activity within the last 2 years of expiry. Past that window, the job may need to be refiled.
